Why did Jesus call himself a shepherd? Why not a king or a master?
In this Lenten Reflection, Laurie Vandenhurk suggests that in the Good Shepherd discourse of John 10, Jesus was trying to help people understand his mission to the disenfranchised. The shepherd's voice is an invitation, not an aggressive call. When Mary anoints Jesus in Bethany, she recognizes the non-violent, compassionate path of Jesus, sharing in our suffering.
